Now the wordof the LORDcame unto Jonahthe sonof Amittai, saying,
Arise, goto Nineveh, that greatcity, and cryagainst it; for their wickednessis come upbefore me.
But Jonahrose upto fleeunto Tarshishfrom the presenceof the LORD, and went downto Joppa; and he founda shipgoingto Tarshish: so he paidthe farethereof, and went downinto it, to gowith them unto Tarshishfrom the presenceof the LORD.
But the LORDsent outa greatwindinto the sea, and there was a mightytempestin the sea, so that the shipwas liketo be broken.
Then the marinerswere afraid, and criedevery manunto his god, and cast forththe wares that were in the shipinto the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonahwas gone downinto the sidesof the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
So the shipmastercameto him, and saidunto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, callupon thy God, if so be that Godwill thinkupon us, that we perish not.
And they saidevery oneto his fellow, Come, and let us castlots, that we may knowfor whose causethis evil is upon us. So they castlots, and the lotfellupon Jonah.
Then saidthey unto him, Tellus, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whencecomest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fearthe LORD, the Godof heaven, which hath madethe seaand the dry land .
Then were the menexceedinglyafraid, and saidunto him, Why hast thou donethis? For the menknewthat he fledfrom the presenceof the LORD, because he had told them.
Then saidthey unto him, What shall we dounto thee, that the seamay be calmunto us? for the seawrought, and was tempestuous.
And he saidunto them, Take me up, and cast me forthinto the sea; so shall the seabe calmunto you: for I knowthat for my sakethis greattempest is upon you.
Nevertheless the menrowed hardto bring it to the land; but they couldnot: for the seawrought, and was tempestuous against them.
Wherefore they criedunto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perishfor this man'life, and laynot upon us innocentblood: for thou, O LORD, hast doneas it pleased thee.
So they took upJonah, and cast him forthinto the sea: and the seaceasedfrom her raging.
Then the menfearedthe LORDexceedingly, and offereda sacrificeunto the LORD, and madevows.
Now the LORDhad prepareda greatfishto swallow upJonah. And Jonahwas in the bellyof the fishthreedaysand threenights.
